Cincinnati Enquirer Covers YWCA’s Firing

ve8QAd   |   January 16, 2008

Our Urban Outreach Director, Arnold Culbreath, is continuing his efforts to call attention to the injustice committed by the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati. They fired caseworker Shannon Nixson following a pro-life presentation. We believe she was fired because two pregnant women, who attended the presentation, changed their minds about scheduled abortions and are now giving life to their babies. They were low-income, African-American women, which we believe had a lot to do with the action taken against Shannon.

I want to keep you informed to recent developments concerning this situation. Recently, the Cincinnati Enquirer, our local newspaper, ran a story on the YWCA firing. It’s called Cincinnati ‘Y’ worker calls firing injustice. In the article, Charlene Ventura, president and CEO of the YWCA, said, “The [abortion] issue is really not related to what the YWCA is about.” While the YWCA nationally has taken a stance that supports abortion rights, Charlene Ventura claimed that abortion education isn’t a focus of the YWCA here.

It’s very unlikely that the unborn babies of the women in the YWCA’s Employment & Literacy Program would still be alive today, if alternatives to abortion hadn’t been presented to them. After all, their mothers were actually scheduled for abortions. It was a financial hardship on one of the women to lose her non-refundable deposit of $180 at the Planned Parenthood abortion mill. As a result, the staff here at Life Issues Institute chipped in and gave her that money.
