Ronald Reagan famously said, “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction..”
While Reagan was absolutely correct, I believe it is also true in the inverse. Victory is never more than one generation away.
Recently I have had the opportunity to travel the country and speak with various student groups on college campuses. Partnering with Leadership Institute, Students for Life, and Turning Point USA chapters, I have seen first hand the fire that exists in the next generation.
Young people are ready for battle. They are standing boldly for life.
If we recognize the moment and the opportunity we have, I believe this generation will see the end of abortion in the United States. Standing on the shoulders of giants that came before, they can see the finish line.
Following the brutal assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, something changed in the hearts and minds of young people. Charlie was a hero to many, and the horrific image of his death is engraved into the minds of a generation. What was meant to silence and intimidate has backfired. Charlie’s bravery inspired millions to take a leap of faith and pick up the microphone.
At every campus event it does not take long to see young people wearing the now iconic “Freedom” shirt that Charlie was wearing when he was murdered.
Most recently I spoke before a student group in Texas just days after an assassination attempt on President Trump. These young people know the danger that they face by speaking out for life on their campus. They understand the risk of hosting a pro-life speaker or attending these events. Unfortunately the threat of violence is constant. Yet they still continue to pack rooms full of young people who are ready to take a stand.
Generation Z is unique. For example, as documented by Barna research, young people are leading a resurgence in church attendance.
If we continue to pour into the next generation and equip them for the battle ahead, they will win.
While speaking with students I was continually reminded of one of my favorite quotes from another iconic American president, Abraham Lincoln. He said, “if I had six hours to chop down a tree, I would spend the first four hours sharpening the axe.”
We must sharpen their axe. One of the most common questions that students have asked me during Q/A is, “what can I do, how can I get more involved and help end abortion?” There is a true and palpable desire to fight for what is right. Young people are ready to storm the gates. If we continue to pour into them and support them, I truly believe they will be successful.
We must always maintain the belief that victory is no more than one generation away. We can and will end abortion.
