Others even try to exterminate them via abortion at the first sight of a diagnosis. But we know the truth: Individuals with Down syndrome are incredible members of society who bring immeasurable joy to their families and those around them. Inspiringly, they continue to break barriers and defy all expectations.

5 Things New Down Syndrome Parents Need to Hear
By Cassy Fiano, Live Action News
The day I was told that my unborn son had Down syndrome was the day my entire world changed. In some ways, it was shattered. Everything I thought I knew about what I could expect from my life, my ideas about the kind of mother I was and could be, the hopes and dreams I had for my children…with one phone call, they were all erased. I was a mess, crying on the phone to my mom and my best friend, trying to understand why this had happened, or how, and what I was supposed to do now.

Julie Tennant and Derrick Tennant
Derrick and Julie Tennant are brother and sister. Julie has Down syndrome. Julie worked at one job for 13 years until it went out of business. Chris Gonzales and Gene Gonzales
At an early age Chris started showing interest in cooking. After graduating from high school, he decided to study Culinary Arts at the InterAmerican University. He was the first person with Down syndrome in Puerto Rico to study at the university and to obtain his certification as a chef. In 2018, he decided to open a Food Truck in his hometown. He named his business “CHRISin Limites”, meaning Chris Without Limits because he says he has no barriers.
But his dreams did not stop there. During the COVID quarantine, he decided to take a Barista course. In 2022 he was able to have and promote his own brand of coffee which he called “CHRISin Limites Coffee”.
Gene Gonzalez worked as an English teacher at the elementary and high school level. As a family they had to work very hard so that Chris could be the most independent that he could. After he and his wife retired they have supported Chris on all his dreams, giving them hope that when they are no longer around he will be independent.
