Chris and Janae Martinez struggled with infertility for fifteen long years. Finally, they completed certification to become foster parents, but weeks later their lives changed forever. A mother left her newborn infant, cord still attached inside a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Belen, New Mexico fire station where Chris is a firefighter. The baby was blue, so he and his fellow firefighters gave him oxygen and warmed him. Little Mikel lived in the NICU for a month, but the Martinez couple remained a daily presence at his side. Finally, the day came when Chris and Janae officially adopted Mikel as their own. Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a no questions asked, safe environment to leave a child. Babies left there can then be legally adopted into loving and waiting arms.
