Nick Hansen, a Colorado teenager, earned his black belt in Taekwondo. It’s a big deal because only one in one-hundred students get that far. Did I mention Nick has Down syndrome? He earned the belt the same way as any other student, with no special treatment. Babette, Nick’s mom, said all of their five children are over achievers, including Nick who recently graduated from high school. She added, “I hate to put limits on Nick because he always proves me wrong.” Sadly, a majority of parents choose abortion when their babies are diagnosed with Down syndrome. The American Academy of Pediatrics issued new guidelines encouraging doctors to be positive and life-affirming with parents and offer them resources and support because there are many more Nicks in the world.
