He was born at just twenty-two weeks and doctors were voting whether or not to give him medical care. The vote was split, so they allowed the parents to break the tie. They desperately wanted care for their son and now he’s thriving. It should’ve been their decision anyway. Tragically, the hospital still clings to its antiquated policy of only treating at twenty-three weeks and beyond. Another woman who now has healthy twin toddlers was told by a medical team, “We won’t waste medication on those babies…who are essentially medical waste.” The University of Iowa is tracking very premature births and the number surviving at twenty-two weeks is increasing. It’s why an amazing Twitter paged called Twenty Two Matters is advocating for these babies.
