New Breakthrough with Locked In Syndrome

Bradley Mattes   |   March 07, 2017

There’s been an amazing breakthrough for people with completely locked-in syndrome, meaning they can’t even more their eyes to communicate with people.  A new study using technology that measures blood oxygen levels and electrical activity in the brain showed patients can answer yes or no questions just by thinking the answers.  The research team in Geneva, Switzerland asked patients the same questions over weeks of time.  And they consistently answered “yes” when asked if they were happy.  One even refused to permit his daughter to marry her boyfriend.  This new non-invasive technology will impact patients suffering from ALS, stroke or spinal cord injury and could potentially save others from being diagnosed as brain dead and killed to harvest their organs.
