When doctors diagnose an unborn baby with Down syndrome, too many of them suggest, or even forcefully pressure parents to abort, saying they won’t amount to anything but hardship. Tell that to Madison Essig who has Down syndrome and just graduated high school with a three point seven GPA and National Honor Society honors. Doctors told Kimberly, Madison’s mother, her daughter might not ever read or write. They were wrong, as most of them are. It was a long battle for Kimberly who had to constantly push educators to treat her as any other student. Madison’s going on to George Mason University where she plans to study disability and advocacy policy. Two states, North Dakota and Indiana, have passed legislation prohibiting abortion for Down syndrome. May there be more.
