Active and Inactive Conscience

Bradley Mattes   |   May 04, 2015

I want to talk with those who in their heart of heart know abortion is wrong because it kills an innocent baby, but don’t want to support making laws to stop it. Nor do they vote for pro-life candidates who oppose abortion. If you’re one of those individuals, I congratulate you on being pro-life because your conscience forms your opinion. But let me ask you this. Is your conscience active or inactive? If your conscience only helps you formulate an opinion but not act on it, your conscience is inactive. If it moves you to both take a position and then take action, it’s an active conscience. The German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
