Capital punishment for disabled babies

It’s never easy for parents to find out that the unborn child they are carrying has been diagnosed with a disability. It raises innumerable questions. Unfortunately, all too often the medical professional who is addressing their concerns is pro-abortion. For example, the grave statistics for babies with a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome are that 90% will be aborted.

The negative attitude toward disabilities is appalling and widespread. In fact, many consider abortion to be the “merciful” thing to do. Others are far more blatant in their opinions. A medical official from the UK named Collin Brewer stated, “Disabled children cost the council too much money and should be put down.” His remarks were made at a disabilities charity event where officials could learn about the organizations and the issues they face. Seemingly, his suggested resolution was extermination. Much of his rationale is based upon the UK’s national healthcare system. It is likely that here in the US, we will face similar controversies under Obamacare.

Thankfully, the organization filed a complaint and after much outrage Brewer resigned from his position. He may have been overtly outspoken, however this is not an isolated incident. Many others hold similar beliefs without being so blatantly offensive.

Abortion is frequently the response when imperfections are discovered prenatally. Most sickening is that it is touted as the humane thing to do. How tragic that society has such little regard for life when it is considered “imperfect.” With pressure mounting from doctors, as well as family members and friends, parents may feel as though they are ending the child’s suffering in a compassionate way. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth because abortion is a violent and brutal form of death with lifelong consequences. Stop to consider that since the health of the unborn baby poses a challenge for the doctors, they advocate that the parents intentionally kill the child now.

A recent case demonstrates just how twisted society has become in its quest for only “perfect” children. Crystal Kelley was a surrogate mother carrying a baby for another couple. At a routine ultrasound, it became apparent that the child carried some abnormalities including a cleft lip and palate, a cyst in the brain and a heart defect. In this case, the child was what I call “biologically tenacious”—the doctors explained that the child would likely survive the pregnancy, but would require several surgeries after she was born. The biological parents felt that the interventions necessary would be too overwhelming for them and instead wished to abort the child. Kelley adamantly disagreed stating, “I told them they had chosen me to carry and protect this child, and that was exactly what I was going to do. I told them it wasn’t their decision to play God.” To make matters even worse, the couple went as far as to offer Kelley $10,000 to have an abortion. The proposal tested Kelley, but ultimately she remained true to her choice to give this baby life.

Kelley said, “No one else could feel (the baby) kicking and moving around inside. I knew from the beginning that this little girl had an amazing fighting spirit.” Kelley has since given birth and after going through some legal hurdles, the baby girl was adopted into a loving family.

It’s ingrained in us to respect the authority of medical doctors, yet many of them are pro-abortion activists. We must not be afraid to ask the hard questions and find out where our doctors stand on life issues. If you are searching for a pro-life doctor, you can connect with the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists at www.aaplog.org, which has a directory of pro-life physicians from across the country. There are good, life-affirming doctors out there and we must do our due diligence to ensure we are receiving care that coincides with our pro-life beliefs.
