Risks and Complications of Drug Induced Abortions

Drug-induced abortions account for the majority of abortions in the United States, amounting to 65% of the total in 2023.[1] The terms “abortion drugs” or “drug-induced abortion” refer to an abortion performed using a two-drug regimen involving mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone is ingested first, blocking progesterone (a hormone necessary for continuing a pregnancy), thereby causing the unborn baby’s death. Misoprostol is then taken 24 to 48 hours later to induce contractions, which expel the baby’s body and additional pregnancy tissue.[2] Drug-induced abortion has a complication rate four times that of surgical abortion.
