Cincinnati, OH (Sept 6, 2005) – Life Issues Institute celebrates the legacy of dignity and integrity that Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist has brought to our nation’s highest court.
Chief Justice Rehnquist’s honorable and lengthy career has come to an end. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Nixon in 1972. From the start, he has been a stalwart defender of the constitutional rights of our nation’s tiniest citizens: preborn children. He was one of only two justices to dissent from Roe vs. Wade. Chief Justice Rehnquist was also instrumental in upholding Congress’s power to withhold federal funding of abortion-on-demand in Harris vs. McRae.
After being elevated to Chief Justice in 1986 by President Reagan, liberal activists frantically attacked Rehnquist, stating that he was a “racist” and “insensitive” to women’s rights. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful in stopping his confirmation. Chief Justice Rehnquist has gone on to establish a “strict constructionist” record throughout his 33 years of exceptional service.
Bradley Mattes, executive director of Life Issues Institute said, “Through thick and thin, Chief Justice Rehnquist has stood tall against raw judicial power. He has truly been faithful to the constitution, and has gallantly worked to uphold the rights of all Americans, including millions of unborn children.”
