Members of Spain’s parliament witnessed history in the making. Mar Galceran is the first Parliamentarian with Down syndrome. It didn’t happen overnight. Mar spent decades working to show that individuals with Down syndrome can be productive citizens in their own right if given the chance. When only eighteen Mar joined the conservative People’s party because she liked its embrace of tradition. She diligently worked her way up the party structure and wants to be seen as a person, not just someone with a disability. She knows not everyone believes she can do this, but her response is, “They don’t know me or my background.” She’s determined to do a good job for the people she represents while making an undeniable statement for those with Down syndrome. Follow your dreams.
