Uruguay is a South American country with a serious depopulation problem. The answer can be found on a new interactive global map just published by Life Issues Institute. While neighboring countries show encouraging population levels, why is Uruguay the odd man out? Researchers point to a drop in fertility of women aged fifteen to twenty-four but say abortion isn’t to blame. However, this directly contradicts with another report showing a one hundred forty three percent increase in legal abortions. The legalization of abortion marked the beginning of what experts call the “great decline,” a steep and accelerated drop-in fertility rates.
