Abortion is mostly illegal in South Korea, but allowed for rape, incest and threats to the mother’s health. Sadly, the existing law is widely ignored, and doctors are doing them upon request. As a result, the government stepped in, calling abortion an “immoral medical practice.” Now if a doctor performs an illegal one he or she can lose their medical license for a month. The threat of losing their livelihood is working, although there’s plenty of whining about it from a prominent doctors’ group. They say it’s “extremely unfair” to stigmatize those who do abortions. What’s really unfair is intentionally killing unborn babies. Doctors must decide if they’re in the business of healing life. If not, they should look for another line of work in South Korea.
