George Pickering’s son suffered a massive stroke last January. Doctors called the young man “brain dead” and the hospital began to progressively shut off his life support, called “terminal wean,” knowing it would kill the patient. Desperate to save his son, George took a gun to the hospital and in a three-hour standoff demanded they give him more time to heal. The callous hospital wouldn’t relent and notified an organ procurement organization the patient’s organs would be available soon. At the end of the standoff, George’s son squeezed his hand three times on demand. The SWAT team brought in its own doctors and was amazed to see the patient was truly alive. George went to jail for almost a year, but his son made a full recovery and they celebrated Christmas together.
