A new children’s book called Sister Apple, Sister Pig is available for free on the Internet. The author, Mary Walling Blackburn, is a self-described feminist activist, and the purpose of the book is to teach young children abortion is a good thing for families. A little boy is told about his older sister who was aborted and is now a ghost, an apple or a pig, but whatever she is, she’s happy. His mother tells him the family wouldn’t have been as happy and financially secure had the girl been allowed to live. The boy then tells his uncle about his sister, saying “Mama had an abortion before she had me,” but reassures him adding, “Sister is a happy ghost!” Research shows the trauma siblings can suffer after an abortion is nothing to be trivialized in a book of fiction.
