Black Madonna Visit Pays Tribute to Pro-Life Pioneer

Editor   |   May 12, 2014

Cincinnati, OH (May 12, 2014) – On Friday, May 9, Life Issues Institute was privileged to host the Czestochowa icon the Black Madonna during her pilgrimage across America. As the icon is associated with the defense of human life, the visit was in honor of the respected pro-life work of Dr. J.C. Willke, president of Life Issues Institute.

“I am both humbled and grateful to have the opportunity to witness the Black Madonna in person,” stated Dr. Willke. “It is a blessing to know how she is influencing the world for the sanctity of life. May many hearts be touched by her presence and leave committed to defending life.”

An intimate prayer service was led by Father Peter West of Human Life International. He explained that the icon is a symbolic representation of the gospel in visual form. Scripture readings were given and the entrustment was read. Fr. West specifically spoke at length about the pro-life movement in America. Prayers were lifted up for all those who have been affected by abortion. Guests were also allotted a time for private prayer and reflection.

The Lady of Czestochowa is one of the most well-known and holiest of Christianity’s relics. According to tradition, it is believed that St. Luke “wrote” the icon that is now known as the “Black Madonna.” Many have gathered to seek intercession of the Blessed Mother in respect to faith, life and the family.

The sacred Black Madonna has traveled around the world. Following stops in the US, the icon is scheduled to tour Mexico and South America. The pilgrimage can be followed at From Ocean to Ocean.
