Not long ago a little girl named Jahi McMath made headlines because doctors declared her brain-dead. She continues to live in a different healthcare facility. Twenty-one-year-old Sam Schmid was also considered brain-dead with massive brain injuries after being hit by a van. Medical staff said Sam’s injuries put him “at the most severe end of the spectrum.” But instead of donating his organs, the doctor did another MRI and saw his brain hadn’t shut down. Days later, Sam was holding up two fingers at the request of his doctor. He’s now back in school, playing basketball and has plans to be a veterinary technician. Certainly not all, but many doctors are too quick to declare patients brain-dead and harvest their organs for other patients.
