A Baby is Not a Punishment

Bradley Mattes   |   April 14, 2008

There are times when elected officials say something that really saddens me. Senator Barack Obama from Illinois was recently at a town hall meeting. He was talking about teen pregnancy. Senator Obama referred to his two daughters, one nine years old, and the other six. Advocating abortion, even for his own grandchild, he said if one of them got pregnant, he didn’t want to punish them with a baby. So in Senator Obama’s mind, a baby is a punishment. I’ve always believed a baby is a blessing. Sure, the way the child is conceived may be the result of sin. But it’s clear through Scripture a baby is a gift from God. Carl Sandburg had it right when he said, “A baby is God’s opinion the world should go on.” It’s sad the senator from Illinois doesn’t agree.
