Was this an underhanded deal?

Last week Chen Guangcheng made headlines by escaping house arrest from his Chinese “thug” captors. Now, He Peirong, the woman who helped Chen escape from his brutal confinement, has disappeared and may be in serious jeopardy.

It was reported that Chen and his wife endured severe beatings and starvation over the last 19 months of house arrest, even though he wasn’t charged with any crime. Chen’s “offense” was speaking out against China’s horrific forced-abortion, one-child population program.

Chen’s dramatic escape has been a huge embarrassment to Chinese government officials because it happened just days before a high-profile meeting with Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. The controversy is overshadowing their efforts to focus on matters of the wallet.

In the past, Secretary Clinton made it clear human rights issues would not get in the way of global warming and economic deals with China. It’s been feared that the Obama administration would turn their backs on Chen if it meant his situation might complicate or delay agreements with the Chinese government. This latest development seems to indicate that they have.

Contrary to what Chinese and US officials are reporting, Chen says that he didn’t want to leave the US embassy. Chen told a reporter he didn’t go to the hospital for medical reasons, but out of fear his family members would be harmed if he didn’t cooperate. Chen also said the US Assistant Secretary had personally assured him that he would accompany Chen to the hospital; however, he was there alone.

Once Secretary Clinton leaves China, there is absolutely no way to guarantee that Chen and his family will not be harmed. Chen has said that he wants to leave China with his family on Mrs. Clinton’s plane.

Chen has two dedicated advocates here in America. Reggie Littlejohn with Women’s Rights Without Frontiers and Congressman Chris Smith have tirelessly advocated for Chen’s freedom through Congress and the media. They are now both expressing grave concern for Chen’s wellbeing.

Congressman Smith, who chairs the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, is holding an emergency hearing today on these recent developments.

It appears the US has thrown Chen to the wolves to fend for himself after promising to assure his protection. It’s of paramount importance for the safety of Chen and his family that we loudly wave a banner on Chen’s behalf. It appears only political pressure will move the Obama administration to honor its commitment to Chen and his family. The United States is now responsible for their safety. Their lives may literally depend upon what we do in the days ahead.

The Democrat party has been talking much lately about a “war on women.” Nowhere is this “war” more evident than in the persecution of women and their unborn babies in China. Chen Guangcheng is considered by many to be a four-star general in the efforts to win this war on behalf of those being victimized.

Noticeably silent during this international controversy are radical pro-abortion activists like Planned Parenthood, NARAL and the National Organization for [some] Women. They all claim to speak for women and defend them, but yet remain stone silent while millions of Chinese women and their babies are being brutalized and killed.

It’s time to let your voice be heard. Post comments to twitter and Facebook. If you blog, make Chen’s captivity and abuse front and center. Contact the White House by clicking here, as well as your elected members of the House by clicking here and Senate by clicking here. Demand that they take swift and immediate action to honor the US commitment to protect Chen and his family. Act like their lives depend upon it, because they may.

You and I are called upon to defend the defenseless—to speak out for those who’ve been silenced. That time is now.
