Virginia Democrats in the General Assembly passed a proposed constitutional amendment that would enshrine abortion up to birth by creating a so-called “fundamental right to reproductive freedom.” The measure cleared both the House and Senate on party-line votes and now goes to a statewide vote in November.
The amendment is as extreme as it is deadly, it would go far beyond even the pre-Dobbs status quo by removing virtually all protections for unborn children and potentially jeopardizing parental consent laws, safety standards, conscience rights, and restrictions on taxpayer-funded abortions.
This radical abortion amendment is the latest in a growing list of attempts to enshrine abortion into state constitutions and must be rejected.
