A Canadian woman was nearly killed, not by her disease, but by a system that failed to care for her. Unable to access treatment for a rare parathyroid condition, she was approved for death under Canada’s Medical Aid in Dying program. Instead of providing timely medical care, the government offered her assisted suicide. Thankfully, that was not the end of her story. She traveled to the United States, where she is now alive and receiving the treatment, she needed all along.
Assisted suicide and euthanasia legislation creates of a culture that treats death as a solution when care becomes inconvenient or costly. Innocent people who want help should never be ushered toward suicide. Compassion means preserving life, not ending it.
