AI to Predict Preterm Delivery

Bradley Mattes   |   June 20, 2023

We’re hearing a ton about artificial intelligence, or AI as it’s called.  The implications of AI are touching every living person – even while still in the womb.  Researchers are using AI to predict which pregnant mothers will experience premature birth.  They developed a deep learning model to predict preterm delivery by analyzing the electrical activity in the mother’s womb.  Then tested this model and published their research in a medical journal.  Researchers gather recordings of these electrical currents that involved one-hundred-fifty-nine women later in pregnancy.  This analysis was combined with other known data about the mother and child.  These findings were based on a small number of women, and the technology has other hurdles to face, but it’s fascinating to consider the possibilities!
