Court Decision Alters Abortion Landscape
U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk overturned the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, the first pill in the chemical abortion regime. Abortion pills are used in more than half of all abortions in the United States. If his decision stands, it will save millions of unborn babies and protect their mothers from the death, horrors and damage that come with chemical abortions.
On behalf of four different medical organizations, the Alliance Defending Freedom sued the FDA. They claimed that, when the organization approved the abortion pill in 2000, it did not carefully consider the hazards. Additionally, they alleged that the FDA disregarded the fact that surgical abortions result with less difficulties overall than chemical abortion drugs.
Kacsmaryk’s opinion reads, in part:
“The Court does not second-guess FDA’s decision-making lightly. But here, FDA acquiesced on its legitimate safety concerns — in violation of its statutory duty — based on plainly unsound reasoning and studies that did not support its conclusions.”
Life Issues Institute’s President Bradley Mattes shared his reaction:
“The Court has sided with medical research showing that chemical abortion pills pose a potentially severe threat to the health and wellbeing of unsuspecting American women.” Mattes added, “While of course killing the baby, these dangerous pills are also known to kill women and inflict thousands more with life-threatening complications. Judge Kacsmaryk’s ruling will protect both women and their babies.”
Mothers often undergo chemical abortion at home with no medical supervision. Many have been hospitalized, and some have died. Life Issues Institute applauds Judge Kacsmaryk’s decision to protect mothers from these dangerous pills and hope his decision prevails should it be appealed.
