The State of New York has one of the most extreme laws on abortion in the nation. It’s legal for any reason throughout nine months of pregnancy. It condones the violent and brutal killing of the state’s most precious natural resource – unborn babies. So, it’s hugely ironic that State Assembly member Patrick Burke has introduced legislation giving legal rights to the Great Lakes to protect them. The bill would give the lakes the right to both exist and flourish while making sure their rights weren’t violated. Being good stewards of the environment is admirable. But at the same time condemning millions of New York citizens to death for being unwanted is a tragedy of epic proportions. New York can have it both ways – protect the environment and demonstrate human compassion.
