The Olympics have begun in earnest and history’s being made. More than ever, female athletes who have given birth are competing. Traditionally, at this level of competition, there’s been intense pressure on athletes to abort their babies. Allyson Felix may become the most decorated track and field athlete in Olympic history of either gender. And she’s doing it as a mom. When Allyson became pregnant, her sponsor, Nike, wanted to reduce her contract by 70%. But she didn’t take it sitting down and as a result, other female athletes have come forward and changes are being made. As we root for these American athletes, we root for motherhood; we root for the life-affirming changes being made to the misguided thinking that there’s no room for motherhood in highly competitive sports. There is and we celebrate it.
