While the US Supreme Court was ruling on a case unrelated to abortion, Justice Clarence Thomas took the opportunity to show the stark difference in the way the Court treats children depending upon the circumstances. The Court gave life without parole to a minor who committed murder, saying courts must consider “a child’s lesser culpability” in such circumstances. Justice Thomas pointed out that when it comes to a minor of the same age deciding to have an abortion, the Courts’ views her maturity to be equal of an adult woman, and has the right to choose. Thomas wrote, “It is curious how the Court’s view of the maturity of minors ebbs and flows depending on the issue.” Thomas appears to serve as the conscience of the nation’s highest court.
