New Mexico State Senator Jacob Candelaria is living proof it’s better to be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. During floor debate on abortion, he declared he threw a medically accurate model of a twelve-week-old unborn baby in the trash. Why? He said it was “offensive.” Then he added, just because your religion says life begins at conception, “doesn’t mean the rest of us have to.” Senator Candelaria needs to learn some basic science. The Carnegie Stages, which are the gold standard for determining when life begins, and internationally required in all textbooks by human embryologists, says life begins at fertilization.
