Lesley McAskie was raped at thirteen and became pregnant. Her parents’ response was to rush her to a facility to abort the child. Forty years later Lesley says she struggles more with the abortion than the sexual assault. “I got over the rape but I never got over my abortion experience.” She says she was given no counseling before or after the abortion and encourages other victims of rape to think twice before choosing one. I’ve spoken to many women in Lesley’s shoes, and those who chose life for their babies never regretted their decisions. However, those who chose abortion all felt it just compounded the emotional trauma. Many Christians mean well when supporting abortion in cases of rape, but the reality is it’s contrary to God’s will and further hurts the woman.
