During my lifetime, I’ve had several hospital stays, and have always said it’s the nurses who make the biggest difference in the experience. Here’s a beautiful example. Stephanie is a nurse with preemies in Jewish General Hospital’s NICU, and she’s seen how small acts of kindness make large impacts on the parents. Stephanie makes tiny superhero capes to hang next to the babies’ incubators, individualizing each one. “These babies are super strong,” she said. “They fight through so much. They’re just little superheroes.” Stephanie’s made about one-hundred capes. Parents see how hard nurses work to keep their fragile babies alive and often emotionally struggle in the alien NICU environment. So Stephanie’s kindness makes a traumatic experience much more human.
