The Seamless Garment

Archbishop Jose Gomez

Several years ago, the pro-life movement was dealt a blow by a strategy pushed by the late Catholic Cardinal, Joseph Bernardin.  When considering which candidates to vote for and where they stand on abortion, he equated abortion as just one of many other issues.  His thinking was called the “seamless garment” which literally often put abortion last on the list of other social issues, such as the environment, poverty and immigration.  Bernardin provided political cover for pro-abortion candidates and it hurt the cause to end abortion.  Now Archbishop Jose Gomez is boldly saying the “seamless garment” is wrong.  Gomez said, “We could never describe slavery as just one of several problems.”  He’s right.  Or said another way, without the right to life, other social rights mean nothing.
