Hopeless Mother in China

Bradley Mattes   |   August 07, 2014

This story’s going to break your heart.  Wei Chung, a young mother in China, was happily married and expecting her first child, but she was born with Down syndrome and had a heart condition needing surgery.  China doesn’t value lives with disabilities so hospitals wouldn’t help.  As a result, her husband abandoned her and the baby.  Destitute, Wei soon found herself homeless and thought the only way out was to drown herself and the baby in the river.  Bystanders saw her walking into the river in street clothes and formed a human chain to pull them out.  After the publicity, Wei was given shelter, and a hospital promised to take a second look at helping the baby.  Imagine how hopeless Wei felt that she’d kill herself and her daughter.  Thank God, things are different now.
