We have very good news from our neighbors up in Canada. A justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia ruled that withdrawing food and water from a patient would be the cause of her death and therefore illegal. In question, was the life of Margaret Bentley, an Alzheimer patient. Her family wanted spoon-fed food and water taken away so she would die sooner. Maplewood Care, the facility where Margaret was living, objected. It’s estimated as many as twenty-percent of nursing home patients require some sort of assistance in eating. Margaret was very fortunate that her facility fought for her life. Many—such as the one where Terri Schiavo was staying—were accomplices in killing the patient. You MUST be vigilant if you have a family member receiving assisted care.
