Forty Year Pregnancy

If you or someone you know is at the end of a pregnancy, I’m sure, at this point, it feels like a long nine months. Maybe this will make you feel better. And then again, maybe not. An eighty-two-year-old woman from Bogota, Columbia complained of stomach pain. An ultrasound revealed she had the calcified body of an unborn baby in her abdomen. It was a pregnancy that developed outside of the uterus, also referred to as a “stone baby.” The baby had been there for forty years without her knowledge. This is extremely rare with only a few hundred cases ever reported. At first they thought it was a tumor, so she probably experienced a mixture of relief and sadness—sad that her baby didn’t live but happy the problem could be solved. Surgery removed the baby.
