Adopting at 50

Bradley Mattes   |   July 06, 2012

Have you seriously considered adoption? When you were over 50 years old? At a time most of us are checking our 401ks and adjusting to empty nests, others are mapping out different plans. Marla and Dwayne Hastings had five grown kids when they started adopting. James and Gracee are both eight and Hudson is Five. Marla says people think they’’re crazy, and I guess they may have a point. But the truth is, they’’re crazy in love with this growing family and a desire to serve the Lord. There’’s even a network of peers and support for these “older adopters.” When Marla was weighing adoption, a colleague and adoptive dad told her, “Better old parents than no parents.” From then on she was hooked. Whatever the downside, these parents are reaping much more good.
