Jimmy Carter on Abortion

Bradley Mattes   |   April 09, 2012

Former President Jimmy Carter recently made news when he urged the Democrat party to moderate its position on abortion. Currently, it supports unrestricted abortion throughout pregnancy, including tax funding. President Carter’’s comments were surprising yet welcome. They’re surprising because as governor of Georgia and president, he personally opposed abortion, but still supported it. I vividly recall demonstrating against Mr. Carter during his presidential campaign. The big, toothy grin he’’s known for noticeably disappeared when he saw the big banner we had unfurled at his campaign stop. President Carter told the media, “Except for rare exceptions, “I never have approved of any abortions.”” He’’s always talked out of both sides of his mouth on abortion, but this time I hope he’’s sincere.
