Virtual Reality

Meet Maria. She’s an 18-year-old virtual character created by Massachusetts state workers. Her role is to fill teens in on “sex, birth control, and issues that matter” through a website called Maria Talks. A $100,000 grant, funded by taxpayer dollars, is what keeps Maria talking. But what she’s promoting leaves many of us speechless.

A significant portion of the site is devoted to sex education, emergency contraception, and abortion. Proponents try to insist the site is fair, but there’s no middle of the road when it comes to life and death. Indeed, the creators of Maria set out on a very clear path — and not one chock-full of medically-accurate information as they so desperately claim.

Take a look at how abortion, a truly grisly procedure, is described: “An abortion is when the contents of the womb (uterus) are removed, so that the uterus goes back to how it was before a woman got pregnant.” That’s it. Nothing more. Instead, the site links teens to publications put out by the National Abortion Federation and NARAL, both longtime radical pro-abortion groups. There, youngsters are warned that crisis pregnancy centers “misinform and intimidate women” in order to achieve an extreme religious agenda. Another section details what can be done to stop CPCs as a whole. Naturally, Planned Parenthood is portrayed as an unbiased resource.

Maria’s creators make no mention of the often lifelong physical and emotional pain women endure after abortions. “My Aunt Lucia says that abortions are safe and effective, though some people may experience temporary discomfort,” Maria says, quickly moving on.

In fact, Maria spends the biggest chunk of her time telling minors how to avoid talking to their parents, advising underage girls to call Planned Parenthood’s hotline for help getting a judicial bypass. “…Young women do this all the time here in Massachusetts,” she says, and “so far, no minor who’s gone through this process has ever been denied access to an abortion by a judge.”

A wave of outrage is spreading throughout Massachusetts even this week. At last count, dozens of legislators signed on to a petition to shut down the publicly-funded site. Liberal commentators and pro-abortion activists are mocking the effort. But detached from reality, desensitized to their own deceptions, they do not speak for the heart and soul of America — and neither does Maria.

Please, encourage everyone you know in Massachusetts to contact Gov. Deval Patrick’s office and insist this agenda-driven site be shut down. Our teens deserve better.

Sincerely,
Bradley Mattes
